A Word From Fr. Tom - 02.14.16

This weekend we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. In the First reading from Deuteronomy, we read how Moses reflects how the people should conduct themselves in the promised land. They are to be grateful for the gifts God gives them. In the Second Reading from Romans, Paul tells us that all people are called to believe in Jesus and confess their faith to him. In today’s Gospel of Luke, we read how Jesus goes into the desert for forty days and is tempted three times by Satan. In the desert, Jesus was just as human as the rest of us.

What are you doing for Lent during this Jubilee Year of Mercy? Are you giving something “up” or doing something “extra?” Let us respond to the invitation of Pope Francis to pray and reflect on the mystery of mercy. Let us immerse ourselves in the mercy of God to undergo a spiritual conversion to let go of distractions and temptations. Let us seek out the Sacrament of Reconciliation to get refreshed and renewed.

Little Sisters of the Poor Sister Margaret Mary, l.s.p. of the Little Sisters of the Poor recently sent a thank you note on behalf of the Sisters’ recent visit to St. James. Through the generosity of our parishioners, they received $4,188.55. All funds collected will be used to continue the tradition of loving care to the elderly living in their home in Brighton Heights. Thank you for your generosity.

St. Joseph Memorial Candle We are pleased to announce another opportunity to have a loved one memorialized throughout the week in our parish bulletin. A memorial candle has been put in place next to our new St. Joseph Statue on the altar. This candle will burn during the week in loving memory of a donor’s intention. A donation of $10 is the suggested offering similar to the Sanctuary candle and Marian candle. Please contact Karin at the rectory office to reserve your space. Because of space limitations we are asking a limit of one intention request per family.

Children’s Envelopes We are pleased to announce that there are Children’s envelopes now available for families with children. Simply pick up an envelope on one of the tables in church or in the Children’s Chapel, and complete the back of the envelope. It provides a great teaching tool about the importance of stewardship! Enjoy!
