LOVE ONE ANOTHER!

As we reach the mid-point of the Easter season, this weekend we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter. The readings this weekend focus on loving one another.

In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we read how Paul and Barnabas complete their missionary journey. The early church continues to grow. In the Gospel of John, Jesus reaches his time of glorification. He gives his disciples a new commandment that they to love one another as he has loved them. This gospel account was the beginning of Jesus’ last discourse at the Last Supper. It is a discourse filled with promise, hope and a vision of the future. Once Judas left, Jesus indicates that the time has come for him to fulfill his mission. The disciples will share in his glorification.

We must actively listen, respond, and put into action in our daily lives the gifts God has given us and is giving us. Let us say a special prayer this week for a person (or persons) whom we may find difficult to get along with and ask the Lord to help us to be more loving towards them.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER!

Confirmation This Thursday, April 28 we welcome Bishop David A. Zubik to St. James to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation to the seventy-one eighth graders. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit may bless our youth and guide them for the future.

Called and Gifted Workshop One hundred people participated in last week’s “Called and Gifted” Workshop conducted by Katherine Coolidge from the Catherine of Siena Institute in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Charlie Hoover from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. The two-day workshop focused on various church teachings and helped the participants to look at their spiritual gifts. Special thanks to members of our Pastoral Council and Called and Gifted Workshop leadership team for organizing this wonderful event. Also thanks to the Knights of Columbus for helping with parking, John Volante from Anthony’s Original Produce of Coraopolis, Robert Pavan from Bruegger’s Bagels of Sewickley, 424 Walnut Restaurant, Patrick Molyneaux, Joe and Sandy Napoli, Patte Grey, Pastoral and Finance Council members and the planning committee.

Parish Improvements Special thanks to Matt Krzan and his father, Tom for helping to renovate the front and side church pews to make them handicap accessible. The pews have been cut for wheel chairs, walkers and canes. Many parishioners and visitors have complimented on how more user friendly it is for them to get in and out of the pew. Those who have trouble walking up to communion are also highly encouraged to sit in these sections to make it easier for distribution of Holy Communion.

Steep Slope Roof Renovations The Diocese has granted St. James Parish to undergo major roof renovations. Our main church “steep slope” roof will be completely replaced. Funds from Our Campaign For the Church Alive! will pay for the repairs. S&N Industries of Harmony, PA has been awarded the contract. Work is set to begin June 7 and last throughout the month of July. Florida Consulting and the Diocesan Office of Property and Planning will assist us with this project.

On Mission For the Church Alive! Recently the Pittsburgh Catholic Newspaper ran a special issue highlighting the new diocesan program On Mission For the Church Alive, which is a planning process that will change the structures, staffing, and pastoral strategies of every district in the Diocese. Each pastor has been asked to appoint six parishioners to be representatives during this process. I am pleased to appoint: Jennifer Cowley, Jason Corsetti, Josh DeNinno, Jon Kuzma, Mary Lu Giver, and Kathleen Wycoff. Stay tuned for future updates in the parish bulletin and during my homilies about this very important process.

Happy Birthday Happy Birthday to Mike Glumac from our maintenance staff who celebrated his birthday on April 23.
