Home Home From the Pastor's Desk A Word From Fr. Tom - 06.19.16
A Word From Fr. Tom - 06.19.16

Last week when I stopped at my parent’s home in Whitehall for dinner, as I pulled my Jeep into their driveway I found my dad Bill, was outside cutting the grass. After dinner I helped him with the bag of grass clippings to place on the curb for trash pickup and I helped him load the lawn mowing equipment back into the storage shed. Over the years, my dad and I have fond memories spending hours outside: cutting grass, trimming hedges, sweeping the sidewalks and pulling weeds. Like father like son, my dad and I love being outdoors. My dad said to me last week, “son, I love it outside, it’s good quiet time.”

Today we celebrate the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings focus on discipleship and following Christ. In today’s Gospel of Luke, we read how Jesus discloses his true Messianic identity to his disciples. He is revealed as a suffering Messiah. Discipleship is about imitating Jesus, taking up our cross and following Him.

It is Father’s Day today when we pause to say thanks to all fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, uncles and all men who hold a “fatherly role” in a person’s life.

Parish Census Thank you to all who participated in our Parish census the weekend of May 14 and 15 and last weekend. A total of 659 census forms have been updated and 27 new parishioners registered in the parish. Any registered parishioner who has not yet updated their form will be called over the summer to make sure we have the correct information. It is very important that everyone participate in this updating process. Please call our Business Manager, Terri Price, at 412-741-6650 extension 312 if you have any questions.

On Mission for the Church Alive! The Diocese of Pittsburgh announced last weekend that ten parishes will be merging into three, with two church buildings closing. St. Matthias in Evans City and St. Gregory in Zelienople will merge into one parish as of July 1. Holy Innocents in Sheraden, Guardian Angels in the West End, Ascension in Ingram and St. Philip in Crafton will merge into one parish as of August 1. Guardian Angels and Holy Innocents churches will close. St. Albert the Great in Baldwin, St. Basil and St. Wendelin in Carrick and St. Norbert in Overbrook (my home parish) will merge as of September 1 forming Holy Apostles Parish. These mergers and closings are a result of shifting in population, financial matters, and also the number of priests available to serve in parishes. Let us be open to the Holy Spirit as we continue to move forward with On Mission for the Church Alive.

Safe Environment Audit The Diocese of Pittsburgh conducts annual Safe Environment audits in parishes to make sure that parishes are following the Safe Environment policies properly for all volunteers and staff. It is very important that all volunteers have the proper up to date clearance forms on file. Our audit will take place on Tuesday, July 12. Please contact our Safe Environment coordinator, Sue Ponticello, at the rectory office 412-741 -6650 extension 315 if you have any questions.
