FINDING THE REAL TREASURES IN LIFE

Last week I received a phone call from my former neighbor, Robbie Paff, letting me know that her mother, Alice Ruhling, had passed away at the age of ninety-one. Mrs. Ruhling was a great lady who lived next door to me in the Carrick/ Overbrook section of Pittsburgh. During the summer she would always sit out on her back porch enjoying talking to her children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends. The Ruhling’s, Paff’s and also the Winschel’s were all close knit families who were our neighbors on the corner block of Sinton Avenue, Yale Drive and Lucina Avenue. It was a true honor to return to my home, St. Norbert Church of Holy Apostles Parish in Overbrook, to celebrate her funeral. Mrs. Ruhling was very supportive of my vocation as a priest. What a real treasure!

This weekend we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary time. The readings this weekend focus on being grateful for God’s blessings and treasures in our life. In the First Reading from the Book of Kings, we read how a young King, Solomon, asks for wisdom. He knows what he needs to guide God’s people along the path of life. In the Gospel of Matthew, we conclude Matthew’s discourse on parables about the Kingdom of God. Jesus tells parables of the buried treasure and the pearl. (This is only found in the Gospel of Matthew). The joy of responding to God’s call is more wonderful than a hidden treasure or a fine pearl.

We are all searchers and treasure hunters in the sense that we are looking for happiness. What are our real treasures in life? We are often quick to see our own faults and failings. Let us open up our eyes and see the true “treasures” that we have: our faith, family, friends and neighbors.
