REAL TREASURES!

This past week has been a very busy for our Women’s Guild in preparation for their annual “Elegant Junk Sale.” It is amazing of all the “stuff” that people donated. Our school cafeteria and rectory garages were lined with furniture, bikes, tools, small appliances, household items, toys, jewelry, purses, collectibles and vintage items. It was fun to browse around to see all the “stuff” that people have collected over the years. As the saying goes one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

This weekend we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary time. The readings this weekend focus on being grateful for God’s blessings and treasures in our life. In the First Reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes, we read how a wise teacher takes a candid look at this world and reminds us to be grateful for the gift of life. The things that are supposed to satisfy human beings do not satisfy them. In the second reading, St. Paul tells us that we have been raised to heaven with Christ. The glorified Christ must be our focus. In the Gospel of Luke, we read the Parable of the rich landowner. Jesus teaches us that the real meaning of life is not to be found in great wealth or numerous possessions. The things that are supposed to satisfy human beings often end up not being satisfying. He warns against greed and stresses the foolishness of depending on material things for one’s security rather than on God. As we approach the end of the month of July and reach the mid-point of the year, let us let go of those “things” that distract us and keep a close relationship with God.
