STAY AWAKE!

As a youngster participating in the Boy Scouts, I often heard the motto be “Be Prepared.” Scouting taught me the basic life skills such as cooking and cleaning, first aid, protecting the environment, being proud of our American Heritage, and being reverent. Being prepared spiritually is an ongoing learning experience. We learn in catholic school and religious education classes that we need to wake up each and every day and live each day to the fullest being prepared for the coming of our Lord. We do not know the hour or day when the Lord will call us home.

This Sunday we celebrate the Thirty-Second Sunday Ordinary Time and the readings this weekend invite us to contemplate the wonder of one day being able to stand in God’s presence. All the readings speak of being watchful and being active seeking God in our daily life.

In the First Reading from the Book of Wisdom, we read how a wise king explains how readily God bestows the gift of wisdom on people who truly search for it. In the Second Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Thessalonians, we continue reading how Paul offers consolation to the people of faith and is thankful for the way the community of faith puts the Gospel into action. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read the Parable of the ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom. This gospel passage focuses on the Second Coming of the Son of God. The Bridegroom represents Christ and the virgins represent Jesus’s followers who are waiting for his return.

As we prepare to conclude the Liturgical Year in a few weeks (Advent begins Sunday, December 3) the next few weekends will focus on the end times. Let us pray that in our attitudes and actions we will eagerly welcome the arrival of the Lord in our everyday lives, and wisely prepare for his coming at the end of time.

The month of November is traditionally a month to remember our loved ones who have gone home with the Lord. At every Mass during this month we will offer our prayers for the names of our loved ones who are listed in the Memorial Board near the pulpit on the altar and the names listed in the Book of Remembrance. Please feel free to inscribe names of your loved ones in our Book of Remembrance located up in front of the church near the pulpit.

STAY AWAKE!
