A Word From Fr. Tom - 12.10.17

This weekend we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. The readings this weekend focus on preparing for the Lord. In the Gospel of Mark, we are introduced to John the Baptist who is a cousin of Jesus. We will read about John this week and next Sunday because he is a major figure during the Season of Advent and focuses on preparation and repentance.

Both Isaiah and John the Baptist remind us that Advent is about preparing the way of the Lord, clearing space and making room for Jesus.

One of the most important things we can do this Advent Season is to prepare our own heart to receive Jesus. During this busy time of the year with work, school, Christmas shopping, writing out Christmas Cards, and attending various holiday gatherings and events, let us slow down and make time for Christ in our hearts.

Parish Share 2017 The annual Parish Share campaign is in full swing. A successful Parish Share collection helps our Diocese to function not only in service to St. James Parish, but all of the 183 parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Parish Share helps educate our Seminarians who are our future priests! We all benefit from Parish Share! Our Goal this year is $179,002.

Parish Improvements Ron Parisi Contracting of Ambridge has completed renovations to the Gathering Space Kitchen and Storage Room. The Women’s Guild and 55 Plus Group now have their own secured storage cabinet. Special thanks to the Women’s Guild for helping to fund this major project!

Ron Parisi also built an additional wooden walkway platform near the cantor stand and piano in the church for easier accessibility for our cantors and choir members.

Tudi Mechanical of McKees Rocks recently installed six new water fountains in the school hallways, Gym, and Gathering Space. A new water bottle filling station was also installed with each new fountain. Special thanks to Jamie and Pam Rogers for helping to fund this wonderful project!

Advent Penance Services Advent is a wonderful time to get refreshed and renewed. There are various Penance Services being conducted the next several weeks to get ready for the Christmas Season.

We will participate in “The Light Is On For You” which every parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will participate this coming Wednesday, December 13. The church will be open for private prayer and confessions will be available from 6:30 to 9:00pm.

The final District Penance Service will be conducted at 6:30pm on Monday, December 18 at St. Joseph in Coraopolis.
