A Word From Fr. Tom - 12.31.17

This year Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Monday. Last Sunday we did a “double header” by attending Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas. This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family and on Monday, New Year’s Day is the Feast of Mary, Mother of God.

Please note that because this year’s Holy Day is falling on a Monday, IT IS NOT A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION to attend Mass. Mass will still be celebrated on New Year’s Eve at 4:00pm and New Years Day at 9:30am. (I know it can be confusing sometimes).

Today we rejoice as we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. In the first reading from Genesis, we read how a wise teacher offers some advice for families. Abraham and Sarah are blessed with a son named Isaac. In the Second Reading to the Hebrews, Paul encourages each family of faith to inspire others to walk with the Lord. In the Gospel of Luke we read the Presentation in the Temple, when Joseph and Mary present baby Jesus to the temple leaders. Simeon and Anna offer prophetic testimony regarding who Jesus is.

We know there is no perfect family, we all face challenges every day. Pray for those families that are divided or who are experiencing divorce, separation, drug addiction, abuse, or infidelity. Let us pray that we all may become one.

On Mission For the Church Alive As we have been hearing at Mass and reading in the Pittsburgh Catholic newspaper throughout the year, the Diocese of Pittsburgh is beginning preparations for “On Mission For the Church Alive! which is a process that will change the structures, staffing, and pastoral strategies of every district in the Diocese effective October 15, 2018. St. James School is now part of the North Hills Catholic Regional School System and St. James Cemetery will begin to be run by the Catholic Parish Cemeteries Association effective January 18.

As we now move into the new year, 2018, our On Mission Team members and I would like to begin to start working with our neighboring parishes and developing friendships. Our team includes: Jason Corsetti, Josh DeNinno, Patty Gebhard, MaryLu Giver, Jon Kuzma, and Donna Pavlis.

The parish model for consideration by the diocese and On Mission Commission include St. Margaret Mary in Moon Twp., St. Joseph in Coraopolis, as well as St. Catherine of Siena in Crescent. (Please note that NO DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE YET). The final model announcements with the clergy assignments will be announced on April 26 and the implementation of the new mass schedules will begin October 15.

Thank you for your openness and prayers as we begin moving forward to plan for the future of our diocese.

Happy Birthday Wishes Birthday wishes to Terri Price, our Business Manager, who celebrated her birthday on December 27 and Bill Hawthorne who will be celebrating his birthday, December 31.

Congratulations to Mason Joseph Ford son of Justin and Brittany Bennett Ford who is being baptized this weekend.

Are You Registered? If you attend St. James on a regular basis and are not officially registered, please complete the form that is in the bulletin and return it to the office. It is very important to be registered especially to obtain a Sponsor Letter to be a Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor. Also, if you are planning to move and change your address, or are not receiving the Pittsburgh Catholic newspaper, please let us know so we can update our files.

Year-End Donations As you make decisions on year-end contributions, please consider St. James Parish. An open donation helps us utilize your gift where it is most needed to run the day to day operations of our parish. If you would like, you can designate your donation to the Parish, School, or Parish Share. May God Bless you and your family this holy season.
